It is no secret that the Glitter and Lace Girls LOVE anything with lace. For our first DIY project, we’re sharing with you how to make lace lanterns. We originally saw this DIY project on Pinterest that used actual lace doilies. We wanted to come up with a budget-friendly option so, if you want to decorate your party or event with LOTS of lace latterns, it wouldn’t break the bank (or make your grandma upset by raiding her linen cloest for all her pretty lace doilies!).
Supplies needed: balloons, paper doilies (we found ours at the grocery store!), wall paper glue, string, and a paint brush.
First blow up all the balloons and attach string to them.
String them up so they are floating and not touching each other.Paint the doilies with the wall paper glue. We found that the best bet is to leave 3-4 doilies layered together to provide a little more structure. It also helped to cut them up into halves or quarters (or use smaller dollies) so they do not bunch together when they are wrapped around the balloon.
Adhere the painted doilies one by one until the balloon is completely covered leaving a small space the the top to attach a light.
Once the balloon is covered, apply an extra layer of wallpaper glue all over the lantern. Let them dry COMPLETELY (overnight is best!). Once they are dry, pop the balloon. The doily will separate from the ballon as it deflates. We can think of so many things you can do with these lanterns – we hung ours from a candlelabra socket cord. It would also set a romantic atmosphere to flip them upside and use a (fake) tealight for a table top lantern!
